It most likely spawned from when dogs were mostly used for working purposes; which is ALL that they did all day, every day.

Real working dogs do not just sit around the house, they work and do what ever it takes to please it's owner.

Dogs were used to help us work and hunt. They were tools about 100 years ago till now there is service dog with help with disasters or handicap people. There is sled dogs and hunting dogs. Retriever family retrievers mostly fowl and medium game. Pointers pointers out the game for the hunter. Sled dogs work in cold climates to move around faster. Dogs originally had jobs but know with cars, grocery stores and all other modern things we need them no less than to be friends. But they used to work all day long. Now the only working dogs are sled dog and service dogs. ............................................................................................. I forgot guard dogs and police dogs. ............................................................................................. Dog who really work hard today Sled dogs Rescue dogs Guide dogs Police dogs herding dogs therapy dogs service dogs ( some alert people with diabetic people when they need sugar. Some with strokes or seizures. ...................................................................................... Dogs that work 10% to 15% ..................................................................................... Hunting dogs don't really hard. They do it for fun with there masters. ......................................................................................... Now do see why they say working like a dog?

There were and are many places where dogs have jobs. Herding dogs watching over flocks of sheep or goats. Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes hauling people and supplies on sleds for miles. Field dogs bred for hunting chasing game or retrieving downed game. Some of them have a dogs life (just sitting around) but some of them "work like dogs! "

Have you ever seen a working dog working cattle and sheep on a farm? They are the epitome of a working dog...even during Ramadan, whatever you think that has to do with your question. There dogs are working dogs in many different environments. Have you seen a guide dog leading the blind? A service dog working with the police? An alert dog working with epileptic folk and people with diabetes? Therapy dogs working with the sick and/ or elderly? Assistance dogs helping physically disabled folk? Security dogs on patrol with their handler? Drug detection dogs at the airports? There are working dogs in many areas. Research and you will learn.
