Diabetic dog who eats only raw food?

Question: Diabetic dog who eats only raw food?

(Posted by: MELODYstarr on 2007-07-13 16:07:36)

I have a puppy whom I just found out has diabetes. She was born in our home, since my mom's a dog breeder for Havanese, and she is just the cutest thing ever. It's the first time that we've had a diabetic dog and since shes mine I have to give her the shots and stuff. I'm only 14 so I really do need help. My mom feeds our dogs raw food, like chicken necks and stuff, and I just wanted to know if that would change since she's diabetic? PLEASE anybody who knows, it's going to be sooo appreciated.

We feed only Raw to all of our dogs. We have a small dog with a blood sugar problem and our vet has told us to grind up some veggies to put into the food for this little guy. We were told that the body is better able to regulate blood sugars by having more complex Carbs in the diet and veggies would serve that purpose. We have not had to go to injections and hopefully will not have to as this seems to be working well. Ask you vet if they think this is a good idea for your dog. Make sure that the dogs are getting a good balance of vitimins and minerals not just raw chicken necks and backs. Make sure that you have some pro-biotics and a good balance of protien and carbs. Look online for some recipes for raw food you can find them by entering BARF Diet into your search engine and it will help you read up on the necessary vitimins and such to make sure your dogs stay healthy. As far as raw not being good for dogs all I can say is we have two of four siblings from a litter the other two went to homes that feed Dry and canned store bought food. One is the premium food available only from a vet the other is grocery store brand. BOTH of these other dogs have had a variety of health problems and septic issues not to mention necessary teeth cleaning and skin and fur problems that my two have not had. We all live in the same small county and we all go to the same vet so I know these folks pretty well. they are converting to the raw program and have noticed an improvement in the two weeks they have been using it such as better breath and better lights in the dogs eyes not to mention less gas and stomach problems so if your dogs are healthy don't let anybody talk you out of Raw food. Good luck you seem like a great 14 year old with a fondness for animals. I admire you.

As long as you are comfortable with giving the shots, the main thing is to watch it's sugar intake. Do you monitor the blood sugar levels also? You should be fine as long as you adhere to a strict diet and follow-ups.

We have a diabetic dog (poodle) who is 7 years old and was diagnosed at 2.5. You could check with your dogs vet, but that is what I feed at 3 of our dogs, with no problems (raw meet contains much much less sugar then bagged or canned foods). After each meal make sure he gets the shot, if he isn't in mood just keep a close eye on his behaviour. If he starts sleeping alot more, peeing in the house or outside excessively, or not acting him self get him to the vet and put Kuro syrup on his gums for the ride. Good luck!!!

Raw food isn't good for anydog or anybody. It contains bacteria that can cause illness. Dogs in the wild eat meat at body temperature so it is still in the process of fighting off harmful bacteria. A good food to use is Innova Evo or Canidae becaue they don't have any fillers and provide the dog with all the nutrients it needs. Plus, they have both been proven to work well for dogs with diabetes.
