Question: My dog is diabetic. i feed her a diet dog food that is hard to get. any feeding suggestions?

The food she is using has to be ordered and the delivery is very unreliable. As she will get ill if she doesn't eat correctly, I get concerned when I have to feed her regular dog food. Is that anything I can substitute the chow with when necessary? Lean chicken, fish, etc. She receives two insulin injections a day, and is healthy otherwise. |

Talk to your vet,and explain the problem to them.Your vet will be able to give you a good idea of what is safe to substitute if you run out of your regular food.He could also advise you if different food would cause the need to adjust daily medicine requirements. |

Speak to your veterinarian about proper diet, it depends on the status of her diabetes. You can try to contact the Hill's Veterinary Diet company, they make a diet for diabetics, ask them for help possibly. |

Changing a dogs food (even when not diabetic) is not good for them. When they get a sudden switch of food, it can cause upset stomach, intestinal distress, etc. Any food change needs to be slowly. So besides it being hard on her not getting the correct food she is used to, but it is hard on her body to have to cope with what a different food is doing to her body. Be sure to order plenty of her special food and order more of it, well before she runs out so that it will arrive in time and make sure you always have plenty on hand. |

That's sad. can you substitute some cooked vegetables and cooked pasta along with the canned food to hold her over? not much though. especially the starchy foods. I need to mix some cooked veggies and macaroni for my yellow lab/ husky mix because he puts on weight quickly |

These would take more effort on your part but you might be able to modify a recipe on one of these sites to suit your needs until the stuff you are waiting for comes in. Or you could talk to your local pet store's manager and see if they would be open to carrying the brand that you buy. |
